Voller Energy Group PLC has achieved another milestone towards the commercialisation of their 1kW class auxiliary power units (APUs) running from standard Calor Gas, propane or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

Three systems have now been installed in different platforms; a Beneteau 411 sailing cruiser, a GenQuip Groundhog mobile welfare cabin and in a recreational vehicle (RV) produced by MCL motor homes. Each of these industry applications represents a significant market opportunity for the Voller Energy fuel cell system.

The fuel cell system is totally self-contained including a proprietary fully automated control and safety system, fuel processor unit, gas reformate clean-up and cooling. This means that existing fuels such as LPG can be used.

Fuel cell technology offers great benefits over the conventional generators that are normally used in the marine, construction and leisure vehicle markets. These benefits include low noise, low vibration, lower maintenance, low fuel usage and low emissions. However, fuel cell technology has been reliant up to now on proprietary fuels such as pure hydrogen which is rarely available in these markets.

Voller has concentrated its developments on fuel cell technology, which uses commonly available fuel products such as LPG. These products have a high energy density, but when used in a fuel cell produce much lower emissions than a conventional generator. In developing these products Voller assists the transition from today's high carbon economy to a low carbon economy, using high efficiency fuel cell systems as an important step along the path to the ultimate solution of the future zero carbon economy.
