BlueSquare Data has installed two 400kW Trinergy UPS systems in its flagship Tier 4 data centre in Milton Keynes. The co-location provider, which offers cost-effective facilities outside of London, cited proven technology combined the prospect of significant energy savings, as the main reasons for selecting Chloride’s Trinergy UPS.

Trinergy is the ideal solution for data centre managers who have to control energy costs and are consciously trying to minimise the carbon footprint of their facilities, whilst still ensuring the highest levels of protection to their load.

“Significant customer growth led to a need for increased power capacity within our facilities, however it was imperative this happened seamlessly to avoid anything but 100 per cent uptime to our customers,” explained Matthew Munson, technical director, BlueSquare Data. “Trinergy is a natural evolution based on tried and tested, reliable hardware. The new Trinergy algorithm makes it the most energy efficient UPS available, which was a major factor in our selection process. Environmental responsibilities are high on our agenda, reflected in our GreenSquare energy efficiency initiative.”

“With the new Trinergy system, we aim to increase our efficiency and reduce our power usage effectiveness (PUE) in the data centre,” said Munson. “Trinergy will allow us to achieve UPS efficiencies of up to 98% helping to secure major savings on power costs and carbon levies under the CRC Energy Efficiency scheme.”

BlueSquare Data takes a modular approach to building its data centres, adding additional UPS modules in parallel with customer demand.

“Trinergy supports this approach,” said Munson. “Additional modules can be added easily, as and when required, to meet our growing load requirements and effectively future proof our system. We anticipate adding two more 400kW Trinergy systems before the end of the year.”

As the site in Milton Keynes is based upon a N+N specification, Chloride’s Project Management team were instrumental in managing and orchestrating the migration of BlueSquare Data’s existing Chloride 90-NET UPS from the ‘B’ side of the data centre to the ‘A’ side, following the installation of the new Trinergy UPS. This was a particular challenge in the live environment of a Tier 4 data centre that had to be accomplished without compromising either the levels of redundancy required by data centre standards or any aspect of power supply or monitoring systems.

“We provided N+N redundancy throughout the transfer. We were able to provide 100% protection and uptime to our clients during the move. Chloride engineers ensured our customers wouldn’t have noticed any difference even if there had been a major failure of multiple power systems during this time,” concluded Munson.
