Massive amount of standby power wasted by British households

A survey conducted by Bye Bye Standby has found that Brits are still clueless when it comes to knowing which home appliances are guzzling energy, even when not fully operating. 64 per cent of the 1,000 people surveyed said they have more than ten appliances plugged in at home at any one time. Remotely cut power to electrical devices that are in standby mode and save energy

Appliances such as TVs, computers and hi-fis left on standby create more than four million tonnes of extra carbon emissions in the UK alone (according to DEFRA), using the equivalent of the annual output of 2½ 700megawatt power stations. A survey by the Energy Saving Trust also found that the average household has up to 12 gadgets left on standby or charging at any one time, which the Trust estimates represents 10 per cent of their entire electricity bill.
