ABB wins National Grid’s bulk transformer contract
(19/11/2007)
National Grid has awarded ABB a five-year bulk contract for power transformers in its latest round of bulk supply negotiations. Under the terms of the contract, ABB will supply National Grid’s UK requirement for 120MVA (275/33kV) and 180MVA (275/66kV) transformers up to 2012. An initial order worth around £9 million has already been placed for six transformers, and these will be delivered in 2009 and 2010.
ABB is providing National Grid with a complete turnkey service for the power transformers covering design, manufacture, factory test, shipping, delivery to site, installation and precommission testing. The transformers, designed to offer increased reliability and improved energy efficiency for power transmission applications, will be manufactured at ABB’s focused feeder factory in Lodz, Poland.
Kevin Mills, ABB’s UK sector manager for transmission, said: “This is the first time that ABB has been successful in National Grid’s bulk transformer contract negotiations and the five-year contract, won under competitive tender, reinforces our strong partnership with National Grid. A key factor in winning the contract was a successful pre-award factory audit of Lodz that has enabled National Grid to add a new manufacturing location into its portfolio.”
